Mominul Haque, a cricketer of significant repute from Bangladesh, entered the world on the 29th of September, 1991, in the coastal district of Cox’s Bazar. Manifesting a profound zeal for cricket during his juvenile years, Haque confronted and overcame physical challenges that initially posed an obstacle to his sporting aspirations. His unyielding resolve to succeed in cricket was evident in his rigorous training practices, including cycling on the extensive beachfront of his hometown, which is recognized as the world’s longest sea beach.

His pursuit of cricketing expertise led him to the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP), an esteemed institution renowned for cultivating cricket talent in the country. At BKSP, he received a graduate degree in 2011, placing him among the distinguished alumni who have made notable contributions to Bangladeshi cricket.

Haque’s educational journey began at Doshaid A.K. School & College, providing him with a foundational academic platform that, in conjunction with his specialized training at BKSP, furnished him with the requisite skills for his subsequent achievements in the sport.

Career Journey from Domestic to International

The commencement of Mominul Haque’s illustrious first-class cricket journey can be traced back to the 2008–09 season, when he made his debut in the National Cricket League (NCL) for Dhaka Division against Chittagong Division. His initial foray into List A cricket occurred within the same season, albeit with Dhaka Division, and this affiliation was fleeting as he transitioned to represent Chittagong in the NCL in the subsequent season. Notably, as of December 2022, Mominul Haque has consistently been the flag-bearer for Chittagong in the realm of domestic cricket, while also gracing the East Zone with his presence in the Bangladesh Cricket League tournament.

The emergence of Mominul in the Twenty20 format transpired in 2011 when he donned the colors of a Bangladesh Cricket Board XI against a touring West Indian team. The following year, he was enlisted to play for Barisal Burners in the inaugural Bangladesh Premier League, a competition that would eventually witness his participation with five of the eight franchises that have graced its stage.

Mominul’s prowess in List A cricket reached its zenith during the 2013–14 season, where he etched his name into the annals of history by forming a record-breaking fourth-wicket partnership. Alongside Roshen Silva, he orchestrated an awe-inspiring partnership, accumulating a staggering 129 runs against Abahani Limited in a Dhaka Premier Division match, a record that remained unbroken as of December 2022.

In the international arena, Mominul’s maiden One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 (T20) endeavors unfurled against the formidable West Indies in 2012, when he stepped in as a replacement for the injured Shakib Al Hasan. His debut performances were commendable, amassing 69 runs and capturing two wickets across four ODI matches. Notably, his initiation into Test cricket took place in Galle against Sri Lanka in March 2013, where he showcased his mettle with a half-century and a total of 156 runs in three innings, culminating in an impressive average of 52.00 runs per innings.

Mominul’s ascendancy in Test cricket was further underscored by his first Test century against New Zealand in Chittagong in 2013, followed by another century in the subsequent Test, making him the second Bangladeshi batsman, after Tamim Iqbal, to achieve centuries in consecutive Test matches. His international cricket journey continued to flourish as he secured his fourth Test century against Zimbabwe in Chittagong in November 2014. Notably, by May 2015, he had participated in 15 Test matches, an accomplishment marked by an extraordinary streak of scoring at least a half-century in one innings of 11 consecutive Test matches.

However, Mominul’s international career experienced a transient downturn in form in 2017, which led to his temporary omission from the squad before Australia’s tour of Bangladesh. Nevertheless, he swiftly made a return, marked by a remarkable performance in the first Test against Sri Lanka in January 2018, where he achieved the rare feat of scoring centuries in both innings—a historic milestone for a Bangladeshi batsman in Test cricket.

In his capacity as captain, Mominul took charge of the Bangladesh A side in 2015 and later ascended to become the 11th captain of Bangladesh’s Test side in October 2019, filling the void left by Shakib Al Hasan’s suspension. His captaincy debut against India yielded mixed results, characterized by two losses. However, his maiden victory as captain was etched in the annals of history against Zimbabwe in February 2020, a match where he also achieved his first century as captain, thereby equalling Tamim Iqbal’s record of nine Test centuries. The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily disrupted Bangladesh’s Test match schedule until February 2021 when they faced defeat in both matches of a series against a depleted West Indies side.

Noteworthy milestones in Mominul’s captaincy include his splendid performance in the first Test of the Bangladesh tour of Sri Lanka in April 2021, where he scored 127, marking his first Test century outside Bangladesh. A subsequent triumph materialized under his leadership in July, in a one-off Test against Zimbabwe. However, the late 2021 series against Pakistan was marked by Bangladesh’s defeat in both Test matches, despite significant rain interruptions.

The pinnacle of Mominul’s captaincy was reached during Bangladesh’s January 2022 tour of New Zealand when they secured their first victory against New Zealand in any format in 33 matches—an accomplishment of great significance during his tenure.

As of December 2022, Mominul Haque’s captaincy record in Test matches stands at three wins, twelve losses, and two draws from seventeen matches. He commemorated his 50th Test match during Bangladesh’s early 2022 tour of South Africa, thereby joining the esteemed ranks of the seventh Bangladeshi to reach this milestone. Regrettably, his captaincy tenure concluded in May 2022 following a series against Sri Lanka, a decision precipitated by a string of subpar batting performances, culminating in his resignation and the reinstatement of Shakib Al Hasan to the helm.

Bowling and Batting Style

Haque’s batting technique is predominantly left-handed, a trait that significantly influences his approach and efficacy on the cricket pitch. This particular orientation in batting is most evident in his role as a middle-order batsman, where he has consistently delivered performances of notable caliber. The left-handed batting stance not only distinguishes Haque but also contributes to his strategic advantage in the game.

In the bowling domain, Haque’s style aligns with the slow left-arm orthodox category. This technique involves a conventional finger-spin approach executed through a left-arm delivery. The adherence to this style not only underscores Haque’s versatility as a cricketer but also enhances his ability to contribute dynamically in various facets of the sport

Personal Life

Mominul Haque, an eminent cricketer from Bangladesh, exhibits a discreet approach towards his personal life. He entered into matrimony with Fariha on the 19th of April, 2019. The details pertaining to his spouse and potential offspring are not extensively documented or accessible in public domains.

Originating from a humble familial background in Cox’s Bazar, the support and encouragement of Mominul’s parents have been integral to his cricketing odyssey. In the midst of a demanding professional schedule characterized by extensive travel for matches and training, Mominul places significant importance on familial bonds, endeavoring to allocate quality time with his family amidst his professional commitments. The ethos of diligence, discipline, and resilience, instilled by his family, have been fundamental to his success and ability to surmount professional challenges.

Notwithstanding, specifics regarding his parents, siblings, or other kin remain undisclosed, reflecting Mominul’s preference to maintain a private family life, thereby directing public focus predominantly towards his cricketing exploits.

The odyssey of Mominul Haque within the realm of cricket transcends the conventional boundaries of a sports career, embodying a saga of personal evolution and tenacity. His biography, chronicling a remarkable journey from a modest upbringing to international stardom, serves as a poignant exemplar of the efficacy of perseverance and dedication. Haque’s professional accolades delineate his mastery on the cricket field, while his personal life reflects the humility and discipline characteristic of a consummate athlete. Mominul Haque not only emerges as an inspirational figure for burgeoning cricketers but also stands as a symbol of the enduring ethos of cricket. In concluding this analytical exploration of his life and career, it is evident that Haque’s legacy is not confined to his cricketing exploits but extends to serve as a motivational beacon for future generations, encouraging them to pursue their aspirations with unwavering zeal and commitment.
